Utilities - Connecting the grid, when there are no connections…. WAN/FAN
About this event
Once the entire existing infrastructure (I.e. fiber or copper) is utilized and all the end points are NOT connected, what are the next steps?
Through this webinar, we are going to discuss the logical steps in evaluating how to connect critical infrastructure when the traditional approach cannot meet demand. We will discuss how utilities can utilize wireless networks to create Wide Area Network (WAN) connections and Field Area Network (FAN) connections that otherwise could not be connected or could not fit into the business case.
We will outline the critical path to get to a network deployment that:
1. Connects critical infrastructure
2. Increases the overall relatability of the field network (FAN)
3. Reduces overall network Operation and Maintenance costs
4. Increases bandwidth to field devices
5. Creates an End to End Private Network to support all applications required to run an efficient/effective network
Topics to be discussed:
Defining the problem statement
- Where do you need to connect
- What are the requirements (Speed, Latency, Applications, Security)
- What are the limiting factors (i.e. Physical infrastructure)
Creating a plan
- Utilization of a consultant
- Utilization of a system integrator
- WAN Network Design (Hybrid Wireless-Microwave / Wireline)
- FAN Area Network Design (Hybrid Point to Multi-Point / Wireline)
- Types of vendors to invite
- Site development planning (Structural Analysis, Construction Drawings, Line of Site)
- FCC licensing process (Microwave licensing)
- Project Management
- Field Deployment
- Testing/Acceptance (Test Standards, Close Out Packages)

Peter Cappiello – CEO, Future Technologies Venture, LLC
